Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV)

When the Day of Pentecost (Shavu’ot- Feast of Weeks) had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Introduction: Today, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out and filled the followers of Jesus as He had promised, if they would tarry in Jerusalem. The Church is separated today by groups that believe in Pentecost and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and those that believe that it was for that time but was withdrawn after the last Apostle died. How sad that Christ’s Church is not in one accord and walking in the fullness of His will for us. Today, I want us to look back on this event that changed the church then and what the Holy Spirit will do for us today if we will come to one accord. My message this morning is “Pentecost 2010.”

Acts 2:1

When the Day of Pentecost (Shavu’ot- Feast of Weeks) had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
1. Day of Pentecost- Greek word for Hebrew Feast of Weeks (Shavu’ot), which was the second of the annual harvest festivals, coming 50 days after Passover.
2. They were all with one accord in one place.  The entire 120 disciples from Acts 1:15.

   • They were all- absolutely all, every one.
   • With one accord- unanimously with one mind.
   • In one place- In Christ. Acts 1:4 (NKJV)

And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me.

Acts 2:2
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
1. It was the sound of a rushing wind, not a literal wind.

Acts 2:3
Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
1. It was the appearance of fire, not literal flames.

Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit- Refers to the Baptism with the Holy Spirit. Now the Holy Spirit is coming to all Jesus’ disciples, in a new, more powerful way.

   • Jesus with His disciples. John 20:21-22 (NKJV)
So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

   • Believers & followers praying for Peter & John. Acts 4:31 (NKJV)
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.

   • Peter with Cornelius. Acts 10:44-46 (NKJV)
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

   • Peter explaining what happened to Jewish believers. Acts 11:15-18 (NKJV)
And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, 'John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?" 18When they heard these things they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life."

 2. And began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
   • 1 Cor. 12:7-11 (NKJV)
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

   • 1 Cor. 12:27-31 (NKJV)
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

Conclusion: Today, we celebrate and remember Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit was poured out and Jesus’ disciples were baptized with the Holy Spirit. This “baptism with the Holy Spirit” is as much for us today as it was for the first disciples. We can have everything they did if we will “be in one accord in one place.” We hold the Holy Spirit back because of poor teaching we have received and a lack of faith. This is our time and our mission cannot be accomplished until we are in one accord. The Holy Spirit desires that we walk in His power and impact our culture and the world around us. You can experience Pentecost today and fulfill your potential and begin to follow Christ in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Close: Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."
