Exodus 20:1-17 (NLT)

Then God instructed the people as follows:

2"I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from slavery in Egypt.
3"Do not worship any other gods besides Me.
4"Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. 5You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate Me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. 6But I lavish My love on those who love Me and obey My commands, even for a thousand generations.
7"Do not misuse the Name of the LORD your God. The LORD will not let you go unpunished if you misuse His Name.
8"Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and regular work, 10but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any kind of work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; then He rested on the seventh day. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
12"Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God will give you.
13"Do not murder.
14"Do not commit adultery.
15"Do not steal.
16"Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
17"Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns."

Introduction: The Ten Commandments (Ex. 20:1-17) were laws given by God as guidelines for daily living. Although God gave the commandments to His people through Moses at Mt. Sinai more than three thousand years ago, they are still relevant today. These laws are also known as the Decalogue, from the Greek word meaning “ten words.”

The Ten Commandments are divided into two sections. The first four commandments govern our relationship with God, while commandments five through ten speak with our relationship to other people.

About 1300 years after God gave these commandments, Jesus upheld them. He actually placed these laws on a higher plane, demanding that the spirit, as well as the legal aspects, of the laws be observed. He placed His stamp of approval on the commandments by declaring “Do no think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Matt. 5:17).

What is a commandment?
1. Hebrew: dabar, commandment.
2. Dictionary: To direct with authority; give orders to. Charge, require.

What are the Ten Commandments?
1. I Am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before Me. Love and trust God only!
2. Do not make idols of any kind. Worship God only!
3. Do not misuse the Name of the Lord your God. Use God’s Name in ways that honor Him!
4. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Rest on the Sabbath day and think about God!
5. Honor your father and mother. Respect and obey your parents.
6. Do not murder. Protect and respect human life.
7. Do not commit adultery. Be true to your husband or wife.
8. Do not steal. Do not take what belongs to others.
9. Do not testify falsely against your neighbor. Do not lie about others.
10. Do not covet. Be satisfied with what you have.

Did Jesus come to abolish the law?
1. NO! Matthew 5:17-19 (NLT)
"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to fulfill them. 18I assure you, until heaven and earth disappear, even the smallest detail of God's law will remain until its purpose is achieved. 19So if you break the smallest commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God's laws and teaches them will be great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus established a higher and tougher law.
1. Matthew 5:20-22 (NLT)
21"You have heard that the Law of Moses says, 'Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.' 22But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell.

Conclusion: God gave the Law (The 10 Commandments) through Moses, for guidelines, for people to use in their daily living. Even though God gave these commandments nearly three thousand years ago, they are still relevant today. Jesus did not come to abolish God’s Law but to fulfill it. Jesus came with a Law that is higher and tougher than the 10 Commandments. His New Commandment to love one another is much harder than anything God tried to establish from the beginning. So establish these commands in your heart and apply them as you live out your daily life.

Close: Exodus 20:18-21 (NLT)
When the people heard the thunder and the loud blast of the horn, and when they saw the lightning and the smoke billowing from the mountain, they stood at a distance, trembling with fear.  19And they said to Moses, "You tell us what God says, and we will listen. But don't let God speak directly to us. If He does, we will die!"  20"Don't be afraid," Moses said, "for God has come in this way to show you His awesome power. From now on, let your fear of Him keep you from sinning!"  21As the people stood in the distance, Moses entered into the deep darkness where God was.
