The Ten Commandments - Commandment No. 1
Exodus 20:2-3 (NKJV)
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3You shall have no other gods before Me.
Introduction: Two weeks ago, I brought you a message on the “Ten Commandments” which God gave Moses for the Hebrew people, to set in place a system of authoritative rules or guidelines to live by. These commandments became known as “The Law of Moses” which was given to him by God on Mt. Sinai and they are as relevant for us today as they were three thousand years ago. Today I want to speak to you about Commandment #1 which is “You shall have no other gods before Me.”
Exodus 20:2 (NKJV)
"I am the LORD your God, who brought you out (rescued, liberated) of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage (slavery).
1. I am the Lord (Yhwh) your God (Elohim). God is laying out for the people who He is and what He has done for them.
2. This is a call to covenant faithfulness by Israel to God’s covenant relationship based on His acts on their behalf.
3. God will use the deliverance from Egypt to identify Himself throughout Israel’s history, and to call them to remember what He has done for them and to live accordingly.
Exodus 20:3 (NKJV)
You shall have no other gods before (besides) Me (only Me).
1. God will not tolerate our love, worship, trust and loyalty to any other but Him.
What other gods do we put before and besides Yhwh?
1. Spouses.
2. Children.
3. Jobs.
4. Recreation (hunting, fishing, golf, etc.)
5. Pets.
6. Hobbies.
Do you remember what God brought you out (rescued) from?
1. Lostness.
2. Sickness & disease.
3. Drugs & Alcohol.
4. Financial ruin.
5. Bad relationships.
6. You name it.
What does Scripture say about God’s commands?
1. They are holy, just and good. Romans 7:12 (NKJV)
Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
2. They are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3 (NKJV)
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
3. They lead to eternal life. John 12:49-50 (NIV)
For I did not speak of My own accord, but the Father who sent Me commanded Me what to say and how to say it. 50I know that His command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told Me to say."
Conclusion: God’s first commandment is that “we have no other gods before Him.” He reminded the Hebrew people of who He is and what He did for them and He does the same with us this morning. This God, who rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt, is the same God who has rescued you and me over and over again. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob demands that we have no other gods beside or before Him. How do we measure up today? Remember what God has rescued you from and give Him your entire love, trust, and loyalty this day and forever.

1 John 2:3-6 (NLT)
And how can we be sure that we belong to Him? By obeying His commandments. 4If someone says, "I belong to God," but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and does not live in the truth. 5But those who obey God's word really do love Him. That is the way to know whether or not we live in Him. 6Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Christ did.
