Exodus 20:13-17 (NKJV)
13"You shall not murder.
14"You shall not commit adultery.
15"You shall not steal.
16"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17"You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's."
Introduction: I have been speaking to you about the “Ten Commandments” that God gave Moses for the Jews that He brought out of Egypt. Commandment 1 is “you shall have no other Gods before Me.” Number 2 is “not to make any false idols and worship them.” Three is “you shall not misuse the Name of the Lord your God.” Commandment 4 is “remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” And 5 is “honor your father and mother.” Today, I want to finish our series by speaking on Commandments 6-10 “do not murder, commit adultery, steal, bear false witness, or covet.”
Exodus 20: 13-17
1. Exodus 20:13 “You shall not murder.”
Jesus raised the bar. Matthew 5:20-22 (NKJV)
For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. 21"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.' 22But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.

2. Exodus 20:14 “You shall not commit adultery.”
Again, Jesus raises the bar. Matthew 5:27-28 (NKJV)
"You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery.' 28But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

• Be satisfied with what you have.
Conclusion: With the giving of the “Ten Commandments” to Israel, God is setting the minimum standards that the people should have to be a just and fair society. Later, Jesus would come and raise the standard for His time and for ours. The Commandments of God are not suggestions we can take or leave. They are the basics for us to live in peace with each other and are the standard on which God’s people live in a world that is contrary to God and His Word. God’s Commandments are immutable and separate us from the world’s unbelievers.
Close: Matthew 22:36-40 (NKJV)
"Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 37Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' 40On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."
