Exodus 3:1-12 (NKJV)

Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian. And he led the flock to the back of the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. 3Then Moses said, "I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn." 4So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." 5Then He said, "Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground." 6Moreover He said, "I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.
7And the LORD said: "I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. 9Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." 11But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" 12So He said, "I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain."

Introduction:

What we have here is the story of Moses meeting God on Mt. Horeb as he was tending the flock of his father in law Jethro. It’s an amazing account of Moses seeing a bush burning without being consumed and God speaking to him from the midst of it. God tells Moses that He has seen the oppression of His people and has heard their cries and now will send Moses to Pharaoh to demand their release and bring them out of Egypt. Moses responds to God by saying “Who am I that I should bring the people out of Egypt. God answers him by telling him that He will be with Moses in the process. And here is the beginning of the Who Am I Syndrome when God asks us to do something or has something for us and we respond to Him “Who Am I” as a way of not receiving or doing what He is asking. And so my message this morning is “The Who Am I Syndrome.”

What is a syndrome?

 1. Dictionary: A group of symptoms that collectively indicate or characterize a disease, psychological disorder or another abnormal condition.
 2. A complex of symptoms indicating the existence of an undesirable condition or quality; a distinctive or characteristic pattern of behavior (The Who Am I Syndrome).
How is the Who Am I Syndrome manifested in our lives?

Who Am I:
 1. That God would or could love me?
 2. That God would forgive my sins?
 3. That God would desire to bless me?
 4. That God would give me gifts?
 5. That God can or would use me?
 6. That God would call me to serve?
 7. That God would call me to ministry?

Reasons for the Who Am I Syndrome:
 1. Real Humility.
 2. False humility.
 3. Laziness.
 4. Apathy.
 5. Passivity.
 6. Fear.

We are who God says we are and can do whatever God asks us to do.

1. Matthew 16:18 (NLT)
Now I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.

2. Matthew 4:18-20 (NKJV)
And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

3. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

4. Who does God say that you are, what does He have for you and what is He calling you to do?
Conclusion: God knows every hair on our head and fills us with potential at birth. He has a plan and a purpose for each of our lives and it’s up to us to fulfill our potential and reach our destiny. It has been His purpose from the beginning to use each of us for His glory. No one has to perish and no one should bear the burden of unforgiven sin. Jesus paid that price for all of us. God has sent His Holy Spirit to baptize us with, give us spiritual gifts, and transform us from the old person into a new creation in Christ. The Kingdom of God is a veritable buffet of gifts and blessings waiting for us to receive. The Who Am I Syndrome is not of the Lord; it is from the pit of hell and keeps us from fulfilling our potential and reaching our destiny. You are who He says you are and can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens you!

Matthew 16:13-19 (NKJV)

When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?" 14So they said, "Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." 15He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" 16Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
